Tom was a cherished husband, father, brother and son who devoted himself to his family, faith and community. Hee dedicated himself to the fire service and his brother and sister firefighters until his death at age 36 from job related kidney cancer. Subsequently, a park, a benevolent foundation, and a street on the campus of Arrowhead Regional Medical Center were named after him.
Hartness responded to a brush fire in the city of Fontana. Chief William J. Jenka witnessed Bob collapse at the pump panel while pumping the fire. Hartness was taken by Mercy Ambulance to Kaiser Foundation Hospital where resuscitation efforts for more than an hour failed to revive him. Robert E Hartness passed away from a heart attack at the age off 44 and had 19 years on the job. Survivors include his widow, Diana, a son, Robert, and a daughter, Joy.
Second-generation firefighter Eddie Keen loved helping people, whether it was putting out fires, training recruits or educating children at San Bernardino Co Fire Dept. firehouse, where he worked for 34 years. Off duty, he was fascinated by reptiles and amassed and impressive knowledge about snakes and lizards. His two loves reflected in his two sons- Randy, who wants to be a medic for the fire service and Ricky, who wants to be a reptile veterinarian. Eddies's life was cut short by job-related respiratory and cardiac problems
Arthur King started his firefighting career in 1983 as a reserve firefighter for the city of Montclair. He rose through the ranks of Victorville Fire Department and joined San Bernardino Fire Department where he served the community with pride and honor. When he was not working, he loved Nascar, playing golf, woodworking and above all, spending time with family. He passed away from job-related cancer in October, 2018.
David Kreske served San Bernardino City Fire for over 29 years and was known for his hard work, organization, sharp intelligence and attention to detail. He had a passion to teach young people about fire service and the importance of becoming trustworthy and responsible adults. He loved spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed golfing, hiking, camping, snow skiing and cruising on his motorcycle. His life was cut short from complications of job-related esophageal cancer.
Gerald "Jerry" Mohney was a dedicated husband, father, uncle and friends to all. He cherished being a member of his beloved San Bernardino Fire Department, where he worked for 36 years. Jerry was known as an honest, plain-speaking, no-nonsense man. He enjoyed golf, hunting, shooting, vacations in San Diego and playing with his dog. He leaves behind his loving wife Linda, daughter Stephanie and a host of family and friends. Jerry died in 2012 of job-related brain cancer.
Cory Bruce Norton is a second-generation firefighter who knew he wanted to join the fire service from an early age. He loved his job and was proud to accept the award for Firefighter Hero of the year in 2016. Outside of his work he enjoyed spending time with his family. He succumbed to the effects of job-related cancer in September 2020.
Ron Reed, known as "Ronbo" dedicated 24 years of his life to the California fire service.He spent most of his career as an engineer, which he loved. He had a lifetime of passion for firefighting and loved the excitement and challenge of battling a burning building and helping others. His greatest joys in life were his children, spending time outdoors, and especially spending time at home with his family. Ron's life was cut short after a long battle with job-related kidney cancer at the age of 50.
Chris used his days off spending time at the river with his Dad and family as well as planning the next big Halloween party. He was very dedicated to his friends and family. Chris died in the line of duty at the young age of 25 doing what he loved, helping others. Chris never married or had kids of his own, but loved being called "Uncle Chris" by his best friends kids. Chris was survived by his father Charles, mother Judy, older sister Jennifer, younger brother Mark and too many friends to count.
San Bernardino County' FD's Station 15 became a brighter place when Vance TOmaselli joined as a paid call firefighter in 1979. Through the years, he planned pancake breakfasts, Christmas parties, and other fire station events and was very committed to his firefighter family. In 2004 when his wife of 38 years passed away, he dove deeper into his work at Station 15. Vance answered his last call to duty when a structure fire broke out in the San Bernardino Mountains. Enroute, he suffered a stroke and passed away five days later.
His family and friends remember him as a quiet, humorous, caring, dependable and loving man, as well as someone who has an insatiable thirst for knowledge. As a testament to this desire to learn, Norm attended college while serving as a firefighter and completed coursework to become a paramedic and a registered nurse. Those who served at his side remember him as the "consummate firefighter"- aggressive, hardworking, brave and caring. He was a loving brother, uncle and leaves behind his sisters, Linda and Irma, and his nephews, Alphonso, Antonio and Marcus. Norm died in 2013, shortly after being diagnosed with job-related colon cancer.
Karl Hegle served the citizens of San Bernadino County with honor and distinction for over 27 years. Karl loved the fire service and started his career in 1995 with California City Fire Department. He joined Upland FD in 2007, serving that community until Upland FD transitioned into the San Bernardino County FD in 2017. Karl also served as a flight paramedic, and a member of Los Angeles County Sheriff Search and Rescue as a reserve deputy. Karl was known for his positive and upbeat personality and always stated, “every day is a gift”. He passed away in November 2022 from job-related cancer. He is survived by his four children.
Michael ‘Mike’ Horton’s interest in the fire service was inspired by his brother-in-law, who was a firefighter. He started his career in the fire service with Norco Fire Department in 1980; and in 2001 joined Riverside County Fire Department before spending the rest of his career with San Bernardino County Fire Department. Mike loved being with his family. He also loved the river, his boat, and his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Mike passed away from job-related cancer in November 2022 and is survived by his wife, five children and preceded in death by his son.
